The gorge that spread before them seemed to have its own gravitational field. She gasped in a breath of air at the sight and then took a few careful steps backward, away from the edge that dropped off into miles of canyon. Several feet below them, a valley wind rippled through a dappled forest, tiny specks of birds darted across the green canopy, and a narrow river snaked its way between the trees unassumingly, as if unaware of the immense, gaping chasm it had created over time.

They had driven for days, Sara and Jacob, and now here they were, overlooking some enchanted land, another world, perhaps, or another century.
